We are delighted that our walking entry in Tavistock Carnival was judged best in class. Our costumes drew on the colourful characters in “The Lorax” – a Dr Seuss children’s story about restoring a forest destroyed by greed – which has been made into a musical and more recently a film. Thanks to the Lions Club of Tavistock for organising this enjoyable community event.

Have your say – colour the future

From Tavistock’s Neighbourhood Development Plan to national policies on climate change: we do have a voice as citizens. At the time of posting it seems to be consultation season! On this page we signpost a selection of current ones, updated on a rolling basis. The answers have to be analysed and taken into account – so supportive as well as critical comments matter. Lets use our freedom to speak up.

No seeds to bring? Come along anyway, pick up some seeds, have a-grow, and bring your own seeds back next year!

There’ll be lots of growers, gardening advice, plenty of chat … together with tea and cake.

We look forward to ‘seeding’ with you.

We can’t run on passion alone …

Transition Tavistock acts as an umbrella for a number of organisations and initiatives all working for a sustainable future. We support Totally Locally, Roots to Transition, Tasty Tavy and Tamar Valley LETS.

We have volunteers involved in Climate Matters and the Local Economic Blueprint; and are active in Local Matters community space.

Tamar Energy Community (TEC) is our biggest spin off, and although we work closely together, TEC is a separate entity working on energy matters and responsible for Local Matters.

The organisations and groups are able to operate because TT provides a common pool of resources. However, to do this, TT requires a small amount of cash, to complement what we can reuse and borrow.

If we can reduce the time our volunteers have to fund raise, it increases the time we are able to dedicate to doing the things that matter in a sustainable community.

We don’t have annual subscriptions so donations, big or small, are always welcome.

On the 17th October from 10am, the Local Giving website has funds to double your donations (up to £10). So it’s the ideal time to support current and future initiatives.

Please show your support and consider this opportunity to double your contribution.

Thank you. Transition Tavistock.

Powering the Night with Sunlight in Golberdon

posterM-SVote here now to help make it happen.

South Hill parish is just 17 minutes from Tavistock.

The Parish Hall in Golberdon village is the heart of all activities and needs money spent on it to keep it going. We aim to “Power the Night with Sunlight” … store the energy generated from the solar panels installed on the hall roof 2 years ago so it can be used when the sun isn’t shining. This will help with running costs and ensure the hall is sustainable for the future.

We have successfully been shortlisted for a M&S Energy grant and now need VOTES, LOTS of VOTES to win the funding. We’re asking all our neighbours and friends and their friends to vote starting on  Sept 4th through to Oct 20th 2017.

We hope with all our efforts and your votes we can make a real difference in our community.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR VOTING. We Need Friends.

Improving Forestry Productivity

The forestry sector can now apply for a new round of Countryside Productivity Scheme which aims to improve productivity of farm and forestry businesses by making targeted investments to encourage best practice and innovation.  The Forestry  Commission sent out a national e-alert about this scheme and also about a reduction in the minimum area required to apply for woodland creation under the Woodland Carbon Fund or Woodland Creation Planning Grant.

Countryside Productivity Scheme (CPS) will offer large grants between £35,000 and £1million for up to 40% of the cost of investments in certain capital items. The full list and all guidance can be found on Gov.uk. However examples include:

  • Timber processors and harvesters which can fell, de-limb, cut to length and sort in one operation,
  • Wood chippers which are crane fed and capable of producing high quality wood chip from virgin fibre for biomass heating systems,
  • Construction of covered areas designed specifically for processing, storage and seasoning of timber and processed firewood. Stores specifically designed for woodchip may also be eligible.
  • The handbook contains full information and some useful examples. This round of CPS closes on 3 April 2018. RPA colleagues running the scheme will be joining us at the Confor Show at Longleat on 7 & 8 September which will be a great chance to meet them and ask your questions.

Countryside Productivity Scheme is focussed on encouraging businesses to make investments in specific larger capital items which have been identified as making the biggest impact on productivity in the forestry sector. LEADER grants also support forestry productivity and they can support smaller investments, with grants usually starting at £2500. They are often more flexible based on local need so may be able to support larger projects which fall outside the scope of CPS.

LEADER grants are available across most of the South West. They are offered by Local Action Groups (see map extract left) and so far grants have already been approved for forestry businesses to buy items such as firewood processors, forestry tractors, timber forwarding trailers, log splitters and mobile sawmills. Eligible projects include kit for woodland harvesting, small-scale extraction and processing, as well as adding value, creating alternative products and developing new forest technologies. Projects need to be able to show there will be an improvement in productivity and ideally sustainable employment. You can find out more and find the contacts for your local area on the Gov.uk website. LEADER funding is available until 2019 but we would recommend contacting them soon if you have a potential project so that they know whether they have sufficient forestry projects coming forward, even if you need some time to work up your application.

If you have read the guidance and are still unsure about whether your project is eligible, or who to contact, please get in touch with Kate Tobin
