The “Climate, Cake and Conversation” evening on Wednesday 30th April at Tavistock Library shared the story of The Refillery, a “zero-waste” shop in Tavistock, set up in 2023 as a Community Interest Company when Jar, a branch Plymouth-based zero-waste shop, closed their Tavistock branch. Powered by volunteers keen to give people the choice to buy food not wrapped in plastic, it’s been an inspiring story of community backed action. Start-up finance came through crowd-funding, and the shop now covers its costs while keeping prices reasonable, being open 6 days a week, and gaining a 5 star food safety rating. It is also developing a role as a place of connection and information sharing on sustainable living and climate change. And the spice rack is a donated baby grand piano – which can be played! The Refillery seeks to source the food and other household goods it sells as ethically as practical. The dilemmas this poses were explored in the discussion that followed. There was plenty of idea sharing in the conversations over coffee, ranging from favourite products to other ways to reduce waste. Check the Events calendar for future dates in this series.
